What's the lucky number in Asia, 8 or 9? I don't remember...?

When I was in Bangkok it was explained to me that either 8 or 9 (I don't recall which) was considered the ultimate number, the luckiest number. Which number is it, and what it behind this belief? Thanks! (Kop Koohn Kah....."thank you" in Thai)
