What does quiet desperation mean?

It means you are hurting a lot (physically or emotionally), but keeping it to yourself (often out of pride or concern for family members) and not whining. People who "lead lives of quiet desperation" are usually people who were born to difficult lives where they had little choice or option and just quietly survive as best they can. I might think of Welsh miners some decades ago as an example.
