Am I being overly paranoid about this puppy mill survivor adoption?

A timid, fearful dog who backs away would not be my notion of the ideal dog for a first time owner - especially one with children. At this point the dog is choosing to flee (back away) - it is not only possible but probable that if pushed the same dog would choose to fight (bite) if it felt trapped (ie: on a leash or if it felt cornered).
